Demiserf's Name Localization
I wanna voice appreciation for not just ditching the Dark Prince moniker for Satan. A lot know they aren't mutually exclusive and I'm glad you see you guys take that route. (DP's real name's probably still Satan anyway, everyone just seems like they go out of their way not to call him that.) Saying this cuz I wanted to ask if hypothetically you had to translate a story mode with "Demiserf"? Would you use PPCh's version, Demon Servant, or Demiserf the Demon Servant?<

We used “Dark Prince” or “Young Noble of Darkness” whenever his title was explicitly mentioned as 闇の魔王 or 闇の貴公子, and as a replacement for the very pompous “ore-sama”, which is used to refer to oneself. Whenever サタン (Satan) appeared explicitly, we left it alone.
Demon Servant’s name is literally the English words “Demon Servant” written in katakana. Unless they also call him by his title 悪魔の使い (the Japanese translation for “demon servant”), we probably wouldn’t refer to him with both Demiserf and Demon Servant.
Champions likely replaced his name with Demiserf because he has a habit of explaining his name’s meaning:
- デーモンサーバントとは「悪魔の使い」の事だ
- Literally: “Demon Servant” (written in katakana, borrowed from English) means “Demon Servant” (written in Japanese, as the translation).
…so they likely chose to replace his name so that it would be less of a “well, duh” sentence if they ever have to translate his text.
We’re unsure what exactly we would do, and we’ll probably have to cross that bridge when/if we get to it.
Some of us are of the opinion that if we ever work on Madou we should translate the names completely literally as the game’s humor likely intends (“Scorpion Man” instead of leaving it as romanized “Sasori Man”), especially since these characters tend to be treated as species instead of individual names, but that would also mean the more iconic names many have gotten used to such as Suketoudara would be replaced too.
So in short, we don’t know (yet).
