Translating Nohoho's Accent

How did you choose to handle Nohoho's accent in translation?

We didn’t do anything particularly complex for Nohoho. He speaks with a Hiroshima accent (as noted in his PPQ descriptions) and ends his sentences with the final particle の “no” which is probably meant to reference his “nohoho” laugh, or のう “nou”, which is part of the Hiroshima dialect. 

Since he’s not a terribly common character, we didn’t exactly plot out a whole new accent equivalent for him in English. We make some simple word substitutions ( “to” -> “ta” ; “you” -> “ya” ; “your” -> “yer”) mostly. As a nod to the “no” ending particle habit, we occasionally end his sentences with “no?” or “y’know?” and otherwise try to introduce short phrases at the end of his sentences to keep a similar rhythm.

Part of this also comes from the fact that Nohoho appeared for us to handle early on when we translated Puyo Puyo~n, and we had a relatively small group of proofreaders at the time, so our translator put down something simple that she thought would fit his lax attitude and no one objected, so our current translations are also about keeping consistency with past decisions. We think this works well enough since it’s distinctive.
